New business owners and small entrepreneurs always have a hard time marketing their products or services to the general public. There are a lot of ways on how to do it correctly, and a lot more to do it wrong.
The first mistake that many do is not doing research regarding your product or service. A lot of us suddenly guess this wonderful idea that we think is needed and is entirely new in the market and we exhaust all our resources to create it, only to find out that there is already a product out there that is exactly the same. Or worse, that the general public have no use of your product in the first place.
You should conduct a market research and hold trial runs for your product—a small sample population to test the reception of the market to your product. This method can save you a lot of problems, and money in the long run.
Another common mistake that owners think is that their product or service will sell itself. No need to advertise because this product is the perfect product and people will rush in to get it.
This thought, being to idealistic, is far from being realistic. People never tend to buy something that they have never heard of. Take time to market and advertise your business. Think of strategies to get into the market scene and have people know your product. And if you play your cards correctly, through a great marketing ploy, then people will flock to you and buy your product.
But in setting up your marketing campaign, don’t fall for another common mistake and that is changing you marketing strategy very often. This mistake happens a lot and is a fatal mistake to those who don’t know it. It may be true that you have gotten tired of the brochure and poster that you have been using for the past year. But just because you see it everyday for the past year doesn’t mean that everybody has seen it everyday for the past year. Don’t change your marketing strategy all of a sudden if it still works. Change it if it no longer does.
Another common mistake is not minding what your competitors do. You should know what the other company is doing, but don’t just copy it because it works. The fact is, it may work for them but not for you. Think of ways to stay ahead your competitors, and keep them on the edge. Just because your competition is known for their low prices doesn’t mean that you have to go and drop yours. Find something else to capitalize in like being of better quality goods or giving incentives and bonuses. Look for a trait that the other company hasn’t used and then dominate the market using this.
By minding the common errors of other business owners, it is now time for you to head out to the real world and test your marketing prowess in the marketplace.
